As an independent administrative institution under the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the National Institute of Industrial Safety (NIIS) has traditionally conducted a wide range of industrial safety research, which includes investigations of the causes of industrial accidents and techniques for their prevention.
Because of the outbreaking of serious industrial accidents in Japan, a great emphasis is being placed on those areas related to largesized equipment used in construction, the adoption of new technologies, and the processing of newly introduced hazardous/unstable substances in chemical plants.
Furthermore, in an attempt to eliminate occupational accidents associated with the use of industrial robots, the increasing number of elderly workers, the NIIS has increased its research in the areas of system safety, automatically controlled equipment, and ergonomics, in an attempt to integrate all necessary safety measures. |
