Chemical Safety Research Group

The group studying chemical safety uses theoretical and experimental methods to prevent chemical accidents associated with the thermal properties of unstable chemicals, exothermic chemical reactions, and the explosion mechanisms of flammable dusts and gases. The group also strives to prevent accidents that could be caused by newly introduced materials or processes and, by so doing, contributes to the development of new technologies.
  1. Evaluation of thermal decomposition hazards
Self-ignition and self-decomposition mechanism of unstable chemicals are studied by use of adiabatic calorimetry (ARC and SIT) and thermal analysis such as DTA, DSC, TG and TG-GCMS.
Experiment name
GC-MS for the study of thermal decomposition.
Apparatus for the thermal analysis of exothermic reactions.

  2. Prevention of gaseous explosions
For the prevention of gaseous explosions, studies are conducted that would limit conditions that might initiate or lead to explosion; maximum pressures and other explosion characteristics, such as the mechanisms of gaseous detonation and explosions of gas-dust mixtures, are studied. Investigations are also conducted on such protective methods as flame-quenching devices and explosion suppression.
Experiment name
Laboratory for the study of the explosion properties of chemicals subjected to high temperatures and pressure.

  3. Prevention of the ignition and explosion of dusts
For the safe handling of dust, studies are conducted to determine the explosion characteristics, explosion limits, fire spread over dust layer and ignition temperature of various kinds of dust particles.
Experiment name
Twenty-liter spherical chamber for testing dust explosions.
Particle image velocimetry for the study of the propagation of dust flame.

  4. Prevention of runaway reactions in chemical processes
Out-of-control exothermic and hazardous reactions are studied to find solutions to hazardous conditions. Computers are used to verify the findings in accidents and to simulate analogies of possible accidents.
Experiment name
Labo-scale reactor for the study of hazardous reactions.
Plant simulator.
Batch plant for verification experiments.
