- 1949
- The Silicosis Laboratory (KEIHAI SHIKENSHITSU) was established at Kinugawa, Tochigi Prefecture, as an attached organization of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, Ministry of Labour, in the same location as the Kinugawa Silicosis Hospital.
- 1956
- According to the Ministry of Labour Organization Act, the (old) National Institute of Industrial Health (RODO EISEI KENKYUSHO) was established in Nakahara-ku, Kawasaki. The Institute consisted of two research departments and five sections, i.e., General Affairs Section, Department of Occupational Diseases (including 2 sections) and Department of Environmental Hygiene (including 2 sections).
Dr. Masayoshi Yamaguchi was appointed as the first Director General.
- 1957
- The (old) National Institute of Industrial Health started the activity.
The Institute was expanded by the addition of the third and fourth sections to Department of Occupational Diseases and the third section to Department of Environmental Hygiene.
- 1960
- Department of Physiology, which consisted of two sections, and the fourth section of Department of Environmental Hygiene were added.
- 1965
- Department of Experimental Toxicology, which included two sections, was added. In its final form, the Institute consisted of four research departments and thirteen sections.
- 1969
- The Forum on the Protection of Workers proposed a new institute. The Ministry of Labour decided the establishment of a new research institute for the promotion of research on general and interdisciplinary industrial medicine.
- 1970
- The sections of all the research departments of the (old) Institute were abolished and the senior researcher system was introduced.
The 63rd Diet passed the Amendment to the Ministry of Labour Organization Act to establish the (new) National Institute of Industrial Health.
- 1972
- The Occupational Safety and Health Law was promulgated.
- 1976
- The (new) National Institute of Industrial Health (SANGYO IGAKU SOGO KENKYUSHO) opened. The new Institute consisted of Section of General Affairs, Department of Industrial Physiology, Department of Occupational Diseases, Department of Experimental Toxicology and Department of Environmental Hygiene. Dr. Masayoshi Yamaguchi was nominated as the first Director General of the new Institute.
In October, Department of Industrial Epidemiology was added to the Institute.
- 1977
- Dr. Hiroyuki Sakabe was as the second Director General.
Department of Human-Environmental Engineering was established.
Crown Prince Akihito visited the Institute.
- 1985
- Dr. Shigeji Koshi was nominated as the third Director General.
- 1990
- Emperor Akihito visited the Institute.
- 1991
- Dr. Sohei Yamamoto was nominated as the fourth Director General.
- 1996
- A symposium on industrial health was held as the 20th anniversary memorial of National Institute of Industrial Health.
- 1997
- The institute was reorganized and consists of the division of research planning and 5 research divisions.
Dr. Haruhiko Sakurai was appointed as the fifth Director General
- 2000
- Dr. Shunichi Araki was nominated as the sixth Director General.
- 2001
- Changed organization form as Independent Administrative Institution.
Dr. Shunichi Araki was nominated as the first President.
